Yiotis
Kiourtsoglou -
fretless bass & acoustic bass.
Born in the city of Kozani
in Northern Greece, and heavily influenced by folk and
traditional music, Kiourtsoglou started
playing the guitar at the age of 15. Two years later,
he began to play the bass. He studied jazz with T. Capilidis,
and along with the Capilidis brothers, they formed the
ELECTRIC JAZZ TRIO, touring throughout Greece. He moved
to the US in 1988 studying jazz at the Los Angeles Musicians
Institute, winning honors and distinctions. Returning
to Greece, he toured the country with his former trio,
and worked with sax player Monny Boyd and trumpet player
Danny Hays recording two albums. In 1993, he recorded
the album "Exit", with Swiss drummer M. Halbheer and
Israeli guitarist Liov Vekutieli. Along with Kostas
Baltazanis and Petros Kourtis, they formed the group
IASIS, and recorded the namesake album. He has taken
part in a large number of recordings; among them Takis
Barberis' EPISODES with Indian percussionist Trilok
Gurtu. He has worked with David Lynch, Sax player
J. Stabfield and drummer B. Hartin in clubs and Jazz
Festivals in Greece, Switzerland, Germany and Hong Kong.
He teaches bass at the Philippos Nakas Odeon and formed
HUMAN TOUCH with Lynch and Lantsias
as "the most obvious step" in fulfilling his music expression.
